Clubs & Groups

Clubs & Groups at Trent University fit primarily into one of two separate classifications: Levy Groups and Associated Groups.

Levy Groups receive direct funding from a student fee (called a levy) that is charged to each full-time undergraduate student with their tuition and ancillary fees. Most levy groups are student groups, although some, while not student-run, are organisations that are connected to the Trent University community in various ways or offer a service or benefit to Trent students. All organisational levy fees must be approved by a referendum of the student body before they can begin to be charged to student accounts.

Associated groups are student organisations that organize on a year-to-year basis but are not directly funded through a dedicated levy fee (as is the case for levy groups). In order to be recognized by The Central and the university, these groups must consist of at least five undergraduate Trent students and must complete a registration process with The Central each year.

Groups that choose to register with The Central are eligible for funding grants, other assistance and a list of benefits including:

  • Office resources, such as free and reduced copying and faxing, use of The Central supplies and a mailbox;
  • Use of the Association’s flim license (with proper notification and permission) for the public screening of movies;
  • Limited insurance coverage through Trent University and the use of the Trent University name and logo;
  • Free website space on the Trent University website, a listing on the Trent and The Central student organisation websites and access to other email services; and
  • Updates regarding The Central events, programs and initiatives of interest to student organisations.

Registration forms, applications and The Central Guide to Student Organisation, Registration and Funding can be obtained from the TCSA office.

Associated groups are funded primarily through a $4.00 levy that is collected in trust and administered by The Central for this purpose. Registered groups can apply for funding grants from this fund twice yearly to assist with the costs of their events and operations.
