Welcome to a Pine Tree Talk presented by the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies and Gzowski College, on Monday, October 16th, 2023 from 5pm to 6:30pm in Nozhem Theatre (ENW 101), followed by a reception with Cherylanne James in the Ernest & Florence Benedict Gathering Space (ENW 102).

Cherylanne James is Anishinaabe from Chippewas of Rama First Nation and is from the Martin Clan. She belongs to the urban Indigenous community of Nogojiwanong (Peterborough, ON) and has called this place home for the past ten years. Cherylanne is a Gzowski College/Trent University alum. She went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Indigenous Governance from the University of Victoria and is a registered Child and Youth Care Practitioner. Currently, Cherylanne is the Educational Developer and Curriculum Lead at First Nations Technical Institute. She also Associate Faculty at Royal Roads University in the Leadership program.
In August 2023, her first book entitled Indigenous Child and Youth: Weaving Two Heart Stories Together was released. Cherylanne dives into understanding power and privilege within the relationships between worker and Indigenous children, youth, and families to build heart-to-heart relationships. The text examines critical aspects such as colonialism, deficit-centred narratives, identity, self-location, wise practices, gender-based violence, kinship, community approaches, language, land, stories, and resurgence.
Cherylanne is a visual artist, writer, educator, and storyteller.
