Referendum Removal Notice

To the membership,

On February 9th, a petition was submitted to the TCSA Elections Committee requesting a referendum question be included in the TCSA Spring Elections to determine if The Trent Arthur Newspaper's current levy fee should be changed from non-refundable to refundable. This petition was presented for notice at the March 12th Board of Directors Meeting.

A motion was put forward for a third party to review the petition. Despite this motion failing, the petition was submitted to Trent’s Office of Student Affairs to ensure all signatures were deemed valid prior to the Spring Election beginning on March 17th.

For a petition to be deemed valid, 10% of the TCSA membership must be in support; this would require the petition to have received 995 signatures. After submitting the signatures for third-party review, the petition received a total of 988 signatures, falling short by 7 signatures to reach the 10% threshold.

As the threshold has not been met, the referendum question has been removed from the Spring 2023 ballot, and the petition has been deemed invalid.

If you have any questions regarding the TCSA’s referendum process, please email boardresource@trentcentral.ca.

The TCSA supports students and families impacted by the earthquakes in Turkey & Syria

On February 6, 2023, a catastrophic earthquake struck Southern Türkiye and Northwestern Syria. Initially, the earthquake hit Gaziantep at a magnitude of 7.8 followed by another 7.5 earthquake.  The Kahramanmaras earthquake has become the biggest disaster in this last century as the death toll passes 33,000.  The Syrian, Turkish and Kurdish people are in dire need of humanitarian aid as it is difficult for them to access foreign relief.

In this time it is critical to provide support for the students and families who have been impacted by the earthquakes. Any and all funds raised during this campaign will support families, relief, and rebuilding efforts. We will be supporting these trusted foundations: Save the Children, & Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS).

Transit During Trent's Exam Period

To our membership,

Please read the update below regarding Peterborough Transit during upcoming final exams:

Peterborough Transit is confident in their ability to deliver undisrupted service during the upcoming exam period. In addition to recently hiring more drivers, transit has additional route 6 runs planned if current base service reaches capacity. Full schedules and real time bus tracking can be found on the Transit App. Peterborough Transit would like to remind students to allow extra time to get to campus as unforeseen circumstances may arise, such as inclement weather.

The TCSA would like to also recognize that a motion was passed at Peterborough City Council on December 5, 2022 that would see the current transit system return to a hub-and-spoke model (all buses travelling to the downtown terminal) effective February 1, 2023. This motion is going back to council for a final vote and the TCSA, along with other stakeholders, will be addressing the potential issues this change may bring. Although the motion does have a date of February 1, 2023, services changes, as per our contract with the city, are not to be implemented during the academic year. We will continue to have discussions with city councilors and other stakeholders and will keep you informed of any updates as we receive them.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email bus@trentcentral.ca.

The survey is anonymous and confidential. After completing the survey, students can enter their email address for a chance to win 1 of 3 $100 gift cards to the Trent Bookstore.
