Challenging Islamophobia: Muslim Women Speak

Trent Spiritual Affairs and the Trent Central Student Association present Challenging Islamophobia: Muslim Women Speak. This virtual panel discussion will highlight the voices of Muslim scholars and activists Farheen Khan, Fareeda Imana, and Ruba Ali Al-Hassani, and will explore the gendered impacts of Islamophobia in Canada. The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session.

Spiritual Affairs is pleased to share that panelist Farheen Khan, founder and Imama at the Women's Mosque of Toronto, will also be joining the Trent Multi-Faith Network as a spiritual care volunteer for Muslim students at Trent.

Event Panelists:

Farheen Khan is the co-founder and Imama of the first Women's Mosque of Canada and is one of the Founding Directors of the Azeeza for Women. She is the author of two memoirs that speak to the impacts of gender-based Islamophobia and gender-based violence. Farheen has worked in the anti-violence-against-women sector for the last 17+ years. She has organized and spoken at several rallies, including Take Back the Night, Dec 6th vigils, International Women's Day gatherings, and Walks to end Violence Against Women. Outside her work with the Women's Mosque, Farheen is the Principal Consultant of FSK & Associates - an organization focused on building capacity of community organizations that are led by and for Black, People of Colour, Women and other marginalized communities to create a more equitable society for all.

Fareeda Imana is an aspiring Indigenous Mental Health Nurse in her final year who is passionate about advocacy and leadership. During her time at Trent, she has been involved in the community in a variety of ways, including as a Residence Life Don and as a student mentor in the IMPACT Leadership program. Currently, she is serving as a Student Governor on the Trent Board of Governors, and as Editor-in-Chief of the Trent Annual. When she isn’t on the go, she loves to spend her time engaging in stimulating conversation to further her knowledge and growth.

Ruba Ali Al-Hassani is a Ph.D. candidate at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. She holds a Masters Degree in Criminology from the University of Toronto and a Masters of Law from Osgoode Hall Law School. She has taught Sociology at York University, and at her alma mater, Trent University, where she majored in Psychology and Sociology. Ruba is a co-founder of the Canadian Association of Muslim Women in Law. She is also a member of the Board of Directors at the Canadian Alopecia Areata Foundation and the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture. Her research interests are many, but focus on Iraqi Studies, Digital Sociology, the Sociology of Storytelling and Emotion, as well as the Sociology of Law, crime, and social control.
